We're excited to partner with SeaTrees, a leading organization focused on restoring blue carbon coastal ecosystems. Together, we're supporting impactful projects in San Diego, California, and Mallorca, Spain.
The project that we're supporting in Mallorca has the goal of restoring seagrass and algae across a 53,820 square-foot area at Formentor. Through debris removal, community education, and advocating for a sustainable blue economy, SeaTrees and The Cleanwave Foundation are making a big difference. They're also installing eco-friendly mooring equipment in collaboration with local authorities, contributing to seagrass habitat restoration and carbon sequestration.
The Marvels of Seagrass Ecosystems
Seagrasses are one of the most remarkable and underrated ecosystems on our planet. Found along the coastlines of every continent except Antarctica, these underwater flowering plants play a crucial role in our marine environments. They form dense meadows that provide shelter, habitat, and food to a diverse range of marine species, from sea turtles to manatees. Seagrasses also act as powerful carbon storage systems, absorbing carbon dioxide from the ocean and atmosphere and storing it in their biomass and soil.
Why Seagrasses Matter
Despite covering only about 0.2% of the global sea floor, seagrasses are responsible for approximately 11% of the organic carbon buried in the ocean. They play a vital role in maintaining water quality, filtering sediment and nutrients, and acting as buffers against storms, flooding, and erosion. However, seagrasses are facing significant threats due to human activities and climate change, with an annual global loss of approximately 1.5%.
